John’s theory seems likely. As a test, try changing the family name to, say, “LS Ultre Grotesk” and see if that behaves as expected, or exhibits the same unexpected behavior.2 -

Yeah, it’s pretty funny that Google seems to now be the leader in this field. (They are up to 18% of their families—261 of 1451—being variable fonts.)2
